Why watching movies is a terrible idea.
The common advice to watch movies in your target language is generally misguided for learners below the C1/C2 level. Below this level learners lack the linguistic foundation needed to effectively understand and benefit from movies, which feature a range of challenges including multiple speaking characters, varied accents and dialects, background noise, and rapid, naturalistic speech. These factors make movies particularly difficult for language learners who have not yet developed robust language systems and heuristics for interpreting noisy or unfamiliar linguistic input. Instead, learners should focus on more controlled and predictable language inputs, such as podcasts or audiobooks, which offer a higher volume of comprehensible language in a more consistent format. While movies can be a source of motivation and cultural exposure, they should not be relied upon for language learning until reaching a more advanced level of proficiency.
